If your counter or stone is more than 5-years old it is likely your counter has NOT been resinated. If not resinated you will need to seal your counter periodically. Furthermore, resins were NOT designed to be sealers, but rather to enhance slab transportability from the quarry to your fabricator. What does "resinated" mean? Why should I care? You may have noticed a proliferation in the types and color of stones available today versus even five years ago. You are not mistaken there are MANY more varieties. This is due largely to the wide spread adoption of the practice of resinating stone. Resinating is the practice of vaccuuming a molten plastic polyester resin through a stone slab. By filling the stone's pores the resin imparts enhanced flexibility, reducing the natural brittleness of the stone, and allowing a slab to be shipped around the world with a reduced risk of damage or breakage enroute. While resinating was developed and adopted to enhance transportability it has a very beneficial side-effect. By filling the pores, one also effectively seals the stone's pores enhancing its stain resistance. Why should I be concerned whether my stone has been sealed? Removing stains can be an expensive process. and involve loss of use of the stone surface for several days. Sealing is preventive maintenance for stone. An insurance policy against an unattractive stain, loss of the surface and the restoration expense to remove it. Once stained, there are no guarantees a stain can be removed. Whether seeking a
